Abstract

Suprasegmental features are aspects of speech that extend beyond individual sounds and influence the meaning and flow of spoken language. This study examined the evolving use of language, particularly how modernization and digital communication shaped linguistic practices. It analyzed the code-switching and linguistic creativity of content creator David Cua, known as Bisaya Conyo Girl, to assess speech patterns. Through an analysis of his TikTok vlogs and viewer comments from November 2024 to January 2025, the study assessed how his suprasegmental features—including intonation, pitch, stress, rhythm, speech tempo, and pausing— are perceived by online audiences and how they shape his content. The findings indicate that Cua’s suprasegmental features diverge from conventional American English norms and are deliberately manipulated to enhance engagement. Furthermore, these features are widely accepted by the online community, influencing both the reception and tone of his vlogs, ultimately contributing to broader changes in digital communication practices.
